Lane, Hicks, and Walker Family Timeline

Preface:

When I started putting together this timeline, my intentions were for it to be for my Lane line only. However, as I worked on it, it became clear that the Walker and Hicks lines needed to be included. Since I have limited information on all three of these lines and their close proximity to each other over the years, it made sense to combine them into one timeline.

My timeline will begin with three men. My 4th Great Grandfathers, Abraham Lane and Abraham Hicks, and my 3rd Great Grandfather Anderson Walker.

In the timeline below, I will provide my information and thoughts, as well as the sources that I have. I will also share some information that has been provided to me by others. I will note where I cannot provide source documents for information, but my research leads me to believe it is correct.

1812:

Abraham Lane:

To date, my most distant Lane ancestor that I can find with any degree of certainty is Abraham Lane. Although I cannot provide a lot of information on Abraham, I do feel this information is correct. The only information I can find concerning the birth or death of Abraham Lane comes from Blount County, Tennessee census records. Information provided to me indicates he had a twin brother Samuel and that Abraham and Samuel's wives were sisters. After looking at the census records, my best guess on a birth year would be 1812. According to census records, he was born in Tennessee.

Abraham Hicks:

My Hicks line begins with Abraham Hicks. Information on his tombstone indicates he was born December 26, 1812. Census records also list him as being born in Tennessee. My earliest records have him in Monroe County, Tennessee and then later in Blount County, Tennessee.

1819:

Anderson Walker:

According to census information, Anderson Walker was born about 1819 in Tennessee. The only three census records I find on him are in Blount County, Tennessee. I have seen family trees online that have his parents as James B. and Joannah Elliott Walker. I do not have any sources to verify this, but I do believe it may be correct.

1832:

Abraham Hicks married Elizabeth Blair on November 8, 1832 in Blount County, Tennessee. Elizabeth was born about 1814 in Tennessee. I do not have any information on her parents.

1836:

Abraham Lane married Delila Williams on May 26, 1836 in Blount County, Tennessee. Delila was born about 1817 in Tennesseee and was the daughter of James and Rebecca Williams.

1840:

I find Abraham Lane in the 1840 Blount County, Tennessee census. His age is listed as 20-30, putting his birth between 1810 and 1820. In addition to a female, age 20-30, we find two children under five, a boy and a girl listed in the household. This is inline with information from later records. There is also a Samuel Lane listed just before him. Both are in the same age range. I do not have any information on the Sarah Lane listed after Abraham.

1845:

Anderson Walker married Jane Ogle on January 9, 1845 in Blount County, Tennessee. Jane was born about 1806 in Tennessee. I don't have any sources to provide proof, but I beleive Jane was previously married to John Ogle and her maiden name was Williams.

1850:

In the 1850 Blount County, Tennessee Census, there appears to be two listings for the Abraham Lane family. The first was taken on December 7th in the 15th Civil District and the second on December 16th in the 17th Civil District. Although the ages and names do differ slightly between the two records, it is clear they are the same family. Oddly, the youngest daughter Martha is not listed in the second record. I will list the information for both.

These are the first records to list my 3rd Great Grandfather, Samuel J. Lane. According to census records, he was born April 1837 in Blount County, Tennessee.

The family of Anderson Walker is living near the family of Abraham Lane in the 15th Civil District listing of the 1850 Blount County, Tennessee Census. This census also lists five children from Jane's previous Ogle marriage.

1854:

Elizabeth Blair Hicks, wife of Abraham Hicks, dies in Monroe County, Tennessee. I have no information to verify her date of death, but it is generally listed as July 29, 1854 in online family trees.

1859:

Abraham Hicks married Rachel Henry on October 6, 1859 in Blount County, Tennessee.

1860:

Samuel J. Lane married Louisa Catherine Hicks on June 10, 1860 in Blount County, Tennessee. Catherine was born January 1837 in Tennessee. She was the daughter of Abraham and Elizabeth Blair Hicks.

The 1860 Blount County, Tennessee Census finds Samuel and Catherine Lane living in the 15th Civil District. Also listed with them is Elizabeth, who is three years old. This is the only record I have found on Elizabeth.

The household listed before them in this census record is for Anderson Walker and his family. This is the first record I find of my 2nd Great Grandmother, Eliza Jane Walker. Eliza was born March 18, 1851 in Blount County, Tennessee. The daughter Delila is listed as what appears to be Lena.

I find Abraham Hicks and his family also living in the 15th Civil District of Blount County, Tennessee. Abraham has remarried to Rachel Henry who was born in Tennessee on September 7, 1830.

The census image at Ancestry is unreadable, so I am relying on a transcription. I remember having the same problem with the Lane and Walker images in this district, but I found a legible one. Thinking that I had found it at Family Search, I looked there, but they do not have the images for the 15th Civil District of Blount County, Tennessee for the 1860 census.

I have been unable to find a census record for Abraham Lane in 1860.

1870:

My 2nd Great Grandfather, James Pink Lane, was the son of Samuel J. and Catherine Hicks Lane. As I looked through the family trees at Ancestry, there was not any mention of a son for Samuel named James. When I first started researching this line, the only James Lane I could find, the right age and area, proved to be the wrong one. After finding his death certificate, I was able to start researching the correct line. It has been confirmed through DNA testing that I do connect to this line and the Death Certificate was written documentation, however I wanted to find the census record showing my James with this family.

James was born on March 13, 1861, so he is not listed with the family in the 1860 census. By 1880 he has his own family and again is not listed with Samuel's family. Finding the 1870 census proved to be more difficult than I had ever imagined. I had found Samuel Lane in Blount County, Tennessee in the 1850, 1860 and 1880 census records, but even searching the 1870 census page by page provided no results. Since the name Lane can easily be misspelled or look different to people transcribing the information, I did searches for Lane, Lone, Law, Love, Lain and others. After years of searching, I was beginning to accept the reality that I was probably not going to find this elusive 1870 census record. But, one day while searching another line in Monroe County, Tennessee, there it was. Finally, the census record that includes my James Lane being listed with the family. The surname was spelled as what appeared to me as Laine. The transcriber had written it as Laure. It is probably worth mentioning at this point that Loudon County, Tennessee was formed from parts of Blount, Monroe and Roane Counties in 1870.

The 1870 Monroe County, Tennessee Census record finds Samuel and Catherine Lane and their family living in Monroe County, Tennessee with four of their children.

I have been unable to find a census record for Abraham Lane or Abraham Hicks in 1870.

1878:

James Pink Lane married Eliza Jane Walker on September 6, 1878 in Blount County, Tennessee.

1880:

James P. Lane and his wife Eliza and two children are in the 18th Civil District of Blount County, Tennessee in the 1880 census. You will notice that Eliza is mistakenly listed as Louisa J. in this record. This census also has the first record of my Great Grandmother Louisa Lane.

Just a few households away I find Abraham Lane, his wife and one son. This son, listed as Dock M. Lane, was born about 1858. Since I have been unable to locate either the 1860 or 1870 census listing for Abraham Lane, the next oldest child I have information on was born about 1850. I feel certain there were children between these two, but without those census records, I will probably never find them. This is the last record I find for Abraham and Delila Lane. Information that I have been given states Abraham died in 1881 and Delila died after 1880.

1890:

Abraham Hicks was born on December 26, 1812 in Tennessee and died on November 29, 1890 in Blount County, Tennessee. He was buried at Myers Cemetery in Blount County, Tennessee.

1896:

Louisa "Lou" Lane, daughter of James P. and Eliza J. Walker Lane, married George W. Evans on November 28, 1896 in Loudon County, Tennessee.

1898:

Rachel Henry Hicks was born on September 7, 1830 in Tennessee and died on July 11, 1898 in Blount County, Tennessee. She was buried at Myers Cemetery in Blount County, Tennessee.

1900:

In the 1900 census I find Samuel J. and Catherine Hicks Lane living in Graham County, North Carolina. Graham County is adjacent to Blount and Monroe Counties in Tennessee. This census lists Catherine as the mother of ten children, with four living, but I have only found information on seven of the children. However, in 1900 I find four of the sons also living in Graham County, North Carolina and my James P. is living in Loudon County, Tennessee.

James P. and Eliza Walker Lane are living in Loudon County, Tennessee in the 1900 census. Their daughter Louisa and her husband George W. Evans are living in the home along with five of their other children. There are a couple of errors in this census record worth pointing out. Minnie's listed birth year is 1882, it should be 1888. Also, the John that is listed as a son, is actually a daughter named Johnnie Mae.

Samuel J. and Catherine Lane Deaths:

This is where things get confusing. It is my hope that someone who reads this would be kind enough to provide information to clarify what I have been able to find on the deaths of Samuel J. and Louisa Catherine Hicks Lane.

At Find A Grave, I find a tombstone for Samuel J. Lane at Lone Oak Cemetery in Graham County, North Carolina. It has the birth as April 4, 1879 and the death as May 9, 1912. In the same cemetery there is a tombstone for Louisa C. Lane, born January 26, 1859 and died June 16, 1929. I am working with photos only and have never visited this cemetery, but both tombstones appear to be the same size and design. They are seperate photos, so I do not know their proximity to each other.

The birth years are much later than what the census records show, but the birth months are the same as the 1900 census record. To further confuse things, I have been unable to find death certificates for either one. Based on census records alone, I would guess that both of their birth years would be 1837.

Information that I have found concerning the death date of Samuel are North Carolina Probate Records and a Civil War Pension Application Card. The probate records do not give a death date, but were dated July 28, 1913. The pension card does give a death date of May 29, 1913. I have not found a pension application.

I have found no other information on Louisa Catherine Hicks Lane. So far, I have been unable to find her in the 1920 census.
